In our last "So you're getting a Puppy" we shared tips on preparing for your new puppy, we covered key planning steps like choosing the right breed, prepping your home, and budgeting for your furry friend. Now that you’ve picked your perfect pup—maybe a Chesapeake Bay Retriever like our Rusty—it’s time to take the next step: nesting. Just like preparing for a baby, these early nesting & puppy training tips will help you create a safe, welcoming environment for your new family member. Here’s how to set you and your puppy up for success!
Chewing Risks and Hazards
Teething puppies are like tiny, adorable piranhas—give them a moment, and they’ll chew anything in sight! To puppy-proof your home, get down to their level (yes, crawl around!) and scan for hazards. Look out for:
Exposed wires that could shock or injure.
Houseplants some of which are toxic to dogs.
Cleaning chemicals left within reach.
Uncovered garbage cans filled with tempting scraps.
Plastic bags that pose choking risks.
Shoes if they are left out the puppy will find them.

Even the best pre-planned spaces are outsmarted by smart puppies!
Take your time to secure these dangers. A little effort now prevents big headaches later! If your pup does snag something they shouldn’t, check out our future article “The Puppy Ate Your Shoes, Now What?” for tips on handling those early oops moments.
Supplies: The Fun Stuff!
Shopping for puppy supplies is one of the most exciting parts of nesting. Since your pup can’t visit stores like PetSmart until their parvo vaccinations are complete, stock up early. Here’s your must-have list:

Collar and leash: Pick a comfy, adjustable set for your pup’s first “outfit.”
Food and water dishes: Choose sturdy, easy-to-clean options.
Bed: A cozy spot for naps (Rusty loves his plush bed!).
Toys: Essential for enrichment and keeping your couch safe. Look for chew toys, squeaky toys, and puzzle games. (Stay tuned for our upcoming toy guide!)
Crate or playpen: Create a safe space for when you’re away. Plan ahead—where will your pup stay during work hours or errands?
Pro tip: Shop with your pup’s size and energy in mind. A high-energy breed like a Chessie needs durable toys to match their enthusiasm!
Food: Fuel for Growing Pups
Puppies eat a lot—and often. To keep their tummy happy, ask your breeder or adoption center what food your pup is eating. Even if it’s not your preferred brand, buy a bag of their current food to start. Switching foods too quickly can upset their stomach, and trust us, housebreaking with a queasy pup is no fun. Plan a gradual transition (mixing old and new food over 7–10 days) and have all supplies ready before your puppy’s homecoming. Your breeder or adoption center can guide you, so don’t hesitate to ask!
